In this tutorial i will show you how to hardwire a car camera (AKA dashcam or car DVR) to your car electricity. this is useful in car cameras so the camera will start record when you start driving and will stop record when you park
Things you will need:
- Car lighter splitter with USB ports
- 12V female lighter socket
- A car camera or any other electrical device you will want to connect to your car electricity. in this example i have installed the Mobius action camera which can be bought from here and a review is available here
- A Digital Multimeter or any type of electricity tester (Multimeter is preferred)
How to install:
First, lets find an electric wire that gives 12V when opening the car’s switch (ACC) and no electricity when closing the car’s switch (ACC).
Open the plastic near to the passengers seat and search for electric wires. in the picture below i found some wires.
Using your Multimeter device test which wire output 12V when the car’s switch is on and no current when the switch is off.
Connect your 12V female lighter socket do this cable, red wire goes to this cable and black (ground) goes to black wire or any other chassis metal connector. in the picture below I’m connecting to the cars chassis.
Connect your car lighter splitter with USB ports to this female adapter and put it any place you want. in my case i hide it inside the glove compartment as seen in the picture below.
Take off the plastic from your right beam. do it carefully, there are vehicles with airbags inside that beam.
Run your camera’s electrical cord from the USB adapter through your right beam and to the middle of your windshield.
Connect the wire to your camera and test that everything is working. open the car’s switch and see the camera is starting to record (might be depend on configuration). close the car’s switch and see camera is shutting down.
